Provenance

Where it came from

Throne of Bone was originally released in the 1994 Alpha and Beta sets for Magic: The Gathering, with the Unlimited Edition appearing shortly thereafter as the game's first base set to feature a white border. Designed as an artifact, it reflected the early gameplay philosophy of Wizards of the Coast, which sought to provide players with specific defensive tools against color-coded threats. In this instance, the card was crafted to counter black-aligned strategies by providing life gain whenever a black spell was played.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose work is iconic for defining the visual language of the game’s first year. Frazier employed a surreal, skeletal aesthetic that emphasized the macabre tone of the early sets. While the card was a common rarity and saw play in casual environments, it was generally considered underpowered in competitive formats compared to more versatile artifacts, eventually finding its place primarily as a piece of history for collectors of the original sets.
