Throne of Bone was originally released in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering core set, later known as Revised Edition. It was created as an uncommon artifact designed to provide players with a defensive mechanism against black spells, reflecting the game's early emphasis on color-coded mechanical counters. The specific printing known as Summer Magic, or Edgar, originated from a small, unauthorized production run intended to correct errors in the Revised print cycle, making it one of the most elusive variations in the history of the game.

The artwork was provided by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists whose distinct, dark, and visceral illustrative style helped define the aesthetic identity of early Magic: The Gathering. Maddocks' depiction of the throne captures the grim fantasy tone prevalent in the game's inception, focusing on macabre imagery to suit the artifact's thematic utility. Because the Summer Magic set was largely recalled and destroyed due to quality control issues, survivors like this card are highly prized for their historical status as a rare anomaly in the game's production archives.
