Where it came from
Stasis was originally released in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, with the Unlimited Edition printing following shortly thereafter. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to capture the flavor of a temporal lock, forcing players to skip their untap step and creating a stagnant board state. Its inclusion in these early sets reflects the experimental era of game design where cards often challenged the fundamental mechanics of turn-based play.
The distinctive illustration was provided by Christopher Rush. Rush sought to convey a sense of ethereal suspension and magical paralysis, utilizing a surreal, dreamlike aesthetic that became iconic for the game’s early period. Upon release, the card received a polarized reception; while some players appreciated its strategic depth in creating lockdown decks, others found its gameplay impact frustrating, establishing its legacy as one of the most controversial and recognizable enchantments in the game's history.
