Provenance

Where it came from

Time Walk was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, designed by Richard Garfield. As part of the 'Power Nine,' a group of cards widely considered the most powerful in the game's history, it was designed to provide an extra turn for a very low mana cost, an effect that fundamentally broke the intended pacing of the game and necessitated its eventual restriction in competitive play.

The Collectors' Edition version was released in 1993 as a non-tournament-legal boxed set aimed at collectors who missed out on the initial limited print runs. Featuring a distinct gold-bordered back to differentiate it from tournament-legal cards, the design retains the original artwork by Amy Weber, who utilized a dreamlike, surreal style that became iconic for the game's early aesthetic. While not playable in official events, this edition is highly sought after today for its preservation of the original art and layout.
