Provenance

Where it came from

Time Walk was introduced in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. As one of the original Power Nine cards, it was intended to be a centerpiece of high-level play, allowing a player to take an extra turn for a remarkably low mana cost. The card was carried over into the Unlimited Edition, which was the first set to feature a white-bordered design, making the cards more accessible for players who found the black-bordered printings too scarce.

The artwork for the card was created by Amy Weber, who utilized a whimsical and surreal style that was common in the early days of the game. Her illustration depicts a clockwork figure traversing a cosmic landscape, capturing the abstract concept of manipulating time. While the card is now considered one of the most powerful and restricted items in the game’s history, its early reception was focused on its tactical dominance in deck construction, eventually leading to its permanent ban or restriction in most competitive formats.
