Provenance

Where it came from

Time Walk was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to capture the essence of high-fantasy time manipulation by granting the player an additional turn for a very low mana cost. This mechanic quickly established it as one of the most powerful cards in the game's history, eventually leading to its permanent ban or restriction in almost all competitive formats.

The iconic illustration for the card was created by Amy Weber, one of the original twenty-five artists commissioned for the set. Weber's artwork depicts a figure stepping through a temporal rift, a design choice that emphasized the ethereal and swift nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card was met with immediate reverence by players who recognized its ability to fundamentally alter the tempo of a match, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the 'Power Nine'—the nine most elusive and influential cards from the game's earliest printings.
