Where it came from
The Tocatli Honor Guard was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ixalan. The set drew significant inspiration from the Age of Discovery and Mesoamerican mythology, focusing on factions competing for control over the plane's hidden treasures. This specific card represents the Sun Empire, a civilization influenced by Aztec and Inca cultures, designed to serve as a tactical answer to creatures that trigger enter-the-battlefield effects.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game's aesthetic. Voss aimed to capture the regal and imposing nature of the Sun Empire's warriors, utilizing a vibrant color palette that emphasized the golden, sun-worshipping themes of the faction. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its utility in the Modern and Standard formats, where its ability to suppress powerful creature interactions provided a necessary strategic balance.
