Where it came from
Torens, Fist of the Angels was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts a central figure in the set's narrative concerning the wedding of the vampire progenitor Olivia Voldaren and the human protector's struggle against the encroaching darkness. Mechanically, it was designed to support creature-heavy white and green strategies, emphasizing a theme of mentorship and squad-building that reflects the character's role as a leader of the Cathars.
The illustration was crafted by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a heroic, upright composition to emphasize Torens's resolve. The design intent was to capture the contrast between the knight's grounded humanity and the gothic, supernatural horror aesthetic characteristic of the Innistrad plane. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on Commander and limited formats for its ability to generate scalable board presence through its training mechanic.
