Where it came from
Torens, Fist of the Angels was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The set focused on a gothic horror theme centered around a lavish vampire wedding, and Torens represents the human resistance fighting against the vampiric encroachment on their lands. As a rare creature card, he was designed to embody the themes of unity and military preparation, acting as a centerpiece for go-wide human tribal decks.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering art community known for her expressive, high-fantasy style. Villeneuve crafted the image to depict Torens as a stalwart, protective leader, emphasizing his role as an inspirational vanguard. The design received praise from players for its mechanical synergy within the set and its strong, heroic visual identity, which perfectly captured the 'Humans vs. Vampires' conflict central to the expansion's narrative.
