Where it came from
Torens, Fist of the Angels was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a human soldier and religious leader within the gothic-horror setting of Innistrad, specifically designed to function as a commander-focused creature that rewards players for building a board of low-cost creatures. Its creation fits into the overarching narrative of the set, which depicts a lavish vampire wedding interrupted by apocalyptic stakes.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his vibrant, expressive style. Voss sought to capture the character's dual nature as a protective force amid the encroaching darkness of the Innistrad plane. Upon release, the card was well-received by players interested in 'go-wide' strategies, praised for its efficient ability to generate tokens and pump them with +1/+1 counters, making it a reliable staple for Selesnya-colored decks in the Commander format.
