Where it came from
Tormenting Voice was released in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Tarkir, a world defined by its warring clans and draconic history, the card was designed to provide red decks with a functional card-advantage spell. Mechanically, it captures the 'looting' effect characteristic of red's impulsive nature, requiring the player to discard a card before drawing two, effectively trading resources to refine a hand.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist known for her evocative character work within the game. Her illustration depicts a figure experiencing a moment of intense, internal psychological turmoil, which visually reinforces the card's flavor text and thematic intent. Since its debut, Tormenting Voice has become a staple utility card in various formats, frequently reprinted in subsequent sets due to its clean, efficient design and clear strategic role.
