Where it came from
Tovolar's Huntmaster was originally released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. This double-faced legendary creature was designed to serve as the face of the Werewolf tribal archetype, mechanically representing the transformation between human and wolf forms through the set's daybound and nightbound keyword mechanics. The card was conceptualized to capture the gothic horror atmosphere of the plane of Innistrad, emphasizing a cycle of predatory dominance.
The art was commissioned from illustrator Chris Rahn, who sought to capture the visceral shift in Tovolar’s physical manifestation. Within the game's competitive ecosystem, the card was received as a cornerstone for aggressive green-red strategies in the Standard format. Its inclusion in The List—a curated selection of cards from throughout Magic's history that can appear in set booster packs—ensured its accessibility to players outside of the initial release window, cementing its status as a staple for tribal commander decks.
