Where it came from
Tovolar's Huntmaster, and its transformed state Tovolar's Packleader, debuted in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card was designed to serve as a thematic centerpiece for the return to the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, specifically focusing on the werewolf tribal archetype. It was created during a period where Wizards of the Coast sought to refine the double-faced card mechanic, ensuring that gameplay felt more fluid and centered around the day and night cycle introduced in the set.
The artwork, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, captures the transformation of the character with her signature focus on high fantasy realism and expressive character design. As a promotional version, this card was distributed through various organized play channels to celebrate the set's release. It was well-received by players for its balance of flavor and mechanical utility, firmly establishing itself as a staple for green-red commander decks that emphasize creature synergy.
