Where it came from
Tovolar's Huntmaster, and its werewolf transformation Tovolar's Packleader, were introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts Tovolar, a legendary werewolf chieftain central to the lore of the plane of Innistrad, reflecting the set's gothic horror themes and the internal conflict of its lycanthropic inhabitants. The design follows the double-faced card mechanic established in previous Innistrad sets, allowing players to simulate the transformation between human form and beast.
The Double Feature version of this card, identified by collector number 204, is part of a curated release that combined cards from both Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow. This special edition is characterized by a unique silver-screen monochromatic art style, intended to evoke the aesthetic of classic black-and-white horror cinema. While the original illustrations are by Chris Rahn, the Double Feature treatment serves as a stylistic tribute to the genre roots of the setting rather than an alteration of the game mechanics themselves.
