Where it came from
Trigger Happy was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth standalone expansion in Wizards of the Coast's Un-series. This set was designed to explore the humorous and boundary-pushing potential of Magic: The Gathering by utilizing space-themed motifs and silver-bordered mechanics that were, for the first time, partially legalized for eternal formats. The card is a direct parody of the game's complex trigger-based mechanics, designed to evoke the chaotic nature of managing multiple card effects simultaneously.
The artwork was illustrated by David Sladek, who employed a vibrant, retro-futuristic aesthetic consistent with the circus-in-space theme of the set. The design emphasizes a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the player experience, specifically the common table-top hurdle of tracking numerous game state triggers. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players who appreciated the lighthearted satire directed toward the game's own intricate rules architecture.
