What it does

As long as this artifact is untapped, each spell that would cost less than three mana to cast costs three mana to cast. (Additional mana in the cost may be paid with any color of mana or colorless mana. For example, a spell that would cost 1 generic mana black mana to cast costs 2 generic mana black mana to cast instead.)

Designed to restrain petty thoughts, but used to repress entire empires.

Provenance

Where it came from

Trinisphere was originally released in the 2004 set Darksteel, designed as a powerful stax piece intended to disrupt combo-heavy decks by imposing a minimum mana cost on all spells. Its restrictive nature made it a cornerstone of artifact-based control strategies in Eternal formats, quickly becoming a recognized figure in the competitive Magic: The Gathering landscape.

This specific printing appeared in the 2009 From the Vault: Exiled collection, a special compilation curated to feature iconic cards that had previously been banned or restricted in tournament play. The artwork was provided by Tim Hildebrandt, who brought his signature fantasy-illustration style to the piece, emphasizing the card's imposing, crystalline architecture and its function as a centralizing force on the battlefield.
