Where it came from
Sunglasses of Urza originated in the early days of Magic: The Gathering as part of the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set, later appearing in the 1993 Unlimited Edition print run. It was conceived as an artifact card designed to provide players with the ability to see the face-down cards of an opponent, reflecting the game's initial design philosophy of incorporating unique, often rule-bending utility effects into early artifact suites.
The card features artwork by Dan Frazier, a seminal artist from Magic's foundational period. Frazier’s illustration style, characterized by a distinct, ink-heavy aesthetic, captures the mystical and somewhat whimsical nature of early artifacts. While the card is often cited for its niche utility and retro charm, it remains a notable piece of the game's history, representing an era where card mechanics were still being defined through experimental and flavor-forward designs.
