Provenance

Where it came from

The Vampire token was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2017 expansion, specifically within the Vampiric Bloodlust deck. This token was produced to support the mechanics of the Edgar Markov commander, allowing players to generate 1/1 black Vampire creature tokens with lifelink during gameplay. Like all tokens from this set, its primary function is to serve as a physical representation of summoned creatures that do not exist as permanent cards in the main deck.

The artwork for this token was executed by illustrator Zack Stella. Stella, a consistent contributor to the game, opted for a classic, gothic aesthetic that fits the traditional Magic: The Gathering interpretation of vampires. The design focuses on a stark, menacing figure meant to evoke the elegance and predatory nature of the creature type, and it was received as a standard but high-quality functional piece within the broader Commander 2017 product line.
