What it does
As long as this creature is untapped, all damage that would be dealt to you by unblocked creatures is dealt to this creature instead.
Good bodyguards are hard to find, mainly because they don't live long.

Where it came from
Veteran Bodyguard was originally released in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering set Legends. The card was designed to introduce the 'banding' keyword mechanic, a complex ability intended to represent a coordinated defensive formation in combat, which allowed creatures to group together to block or attack as a single unit.
The illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a frequent contributor to the game's early sets. His style, characterized by a gritty and grounded aesthetic, suited the mercenary theme of the character. While the card is a staple of the Legends set's lore, the banding mechanic proved difficult for many players to master, leading to its eventual retirement from standard rules.
