What it does
As long as this creature is untapped, all damage that would be dealt to you by unblocked creatures is dealt to this creature instead.
Good bodyguards are hard to find, mainly because they don't live long.

Where it came from
Veteran Bodyguard was originally released in the 1993 Collectors' Edition set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, published by Wizards of the Coast. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was part of a foundational effort to balance early gameplay through defensive mechanics, specifically the 'defender' keyword, which prevented the creature from attacking. It serves as a classic example of the game's initial mechanical exploration during its inaugural year.
The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Quinton Hoover, known for his distinct, fluid style that defined much of the early aesthetic of the game. Hoover utilized his signature linework to depict a steadfast protector, aiming to convey a sense of reliability and sturdiness. Upon its release, the card was widely recognized by players for its utilitarian role in early deck-building strategies, offering a low-cost barrier against aggressive play styles.
