What it does
As long as this creature is untapped, all damage that would be dealt to you by unblocked creatures is dealt to this creature instead.
Good bodyguards are hard to find, mainly because they don't live long.

Where it came from
Veteran Bodyguard was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural core set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. Designed to introduce the mechanics of creature combat and defense, the card features a defensive keyword ability that was foundational to early gameplay strategies, reflecting the set's intent to establish a high-fantasy tactical ecosystem.
The artwork for Veteran Bodyguard was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic artists from the game's earliest years. Rush’s illustration, characterized by the raw, distinctive style typical of the Alpha set, captures the stoic essence of a protector. At the time of release, the card was viewed as a functional utility piece, though it has since become a significant historical artifact for collectors interested in the aesthetic and mechanical evolution of the hobby.
