Where it came from
Vilis, Broker of Blood was originally released as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, hitting shelves in July 2019. The card was designed as a high-mana value centerpiece for black-aligned decks, intended to reward players for paying life to draw cards—a classic design trope that draws inspiration from earlier legendary cards like Griselbrand. It functions as a powerful engine in Commander format, where its ability to manipulate life totals and card advantage makes it a coveted pull for enthusiasts of control and combo archetypes.
The specific version designated 122p is the promotional edition, which features distinct alternate art. Illustrators for the Magic: The Gathering series often aim for a visceral, high-fantasy aesthetic, and this piece focuses on the macabre, regal nature of the character. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by the player base for its synergy with other cards that enable self-sacrifice, and it remains a staple in graveyard-centric strategies, demonstrating the enduring appeal of high-risk, high-reward card design.
