Where it came from
Vivien on the Hunt was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Streets of New Capenna. The set explores an art deco-inspired metropolis ruled by five crime families, blending traditional fantasy tropes with a 1920s noir aesthetic. This specific card represents the planeswalker Vivien Reid, reimagined to fit the urban, syndicate-heavy theme of the setting, emphasizing her role as an apex predator adapting to a sophisticated, dangerous environment.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, an artist noted for his dynamic character work within the game. His design for Vivien moves away from her usual wilderness-focused iconography, opting for attire and color palettes that harmonize with the gilded, industrial style of New Capenna. Upon its release, the card drew interest from competitive players due to its ability to facilitate complex, repeatable patterns when combined with other specific game mechanics, cementing its status as a tactically significant piece in the set's lineup.
