Where it came from
Vivien on the Hunt, numbered 162p, was released as a promotional card for the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set, Streets of New Capenna. This set drew inspiration from the art deco aesthetics and organized crime tropes of 1920s American cities, reimagined through the lens of a fantasy metropolis. The card represents a specific iteration of the recurring planeswalker character Vivien Reid, adapted to fit the urban, faction-based narrative of New Capenna.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character portraits and atmospheric lighting. Villeneuve’s design emphasizes the huntress's connection to nature amidst a concrete, industrial landscape, using the sharp lines and gilded motifs characteristic of the set’s visual identity. As a promotional variant, this piece was intended to showcase the set's distinct stylistic departure from standard high-fantasy tropes, and it was generally well-received by collectors who prioritize the set's unique art deco-inspired borders and thematic consistency.
