Where it came from
Vivien on the Hunt was released in 2022 as part of the promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Streets of New Capenna. This card depicts the planeswalker Vivien Reid, reimagined within the art deco, noir-inspired aesthetic of the city of New Capenna. The card was designed as a showcase variant, utilizing the specific stylized border and architectural themes that defined the set's visual identity, contrasting the character's typical wilderness aesthetic with the gritty, opulent urban environment of the plane.
The artwork for this specific promotion was crafted to emphasize the character's integration into the plane's syndicate-controlled society. As a planeswalker card, its design functionality focused on graveyard synergy and creature-based tempo play, which resonated with players who favored aggressive board states. The promo variant was widely sought by collectors for its distinctive showcase frame, which serves as a notable example of Wizards of the Coast's strategy to use recurring character archetypes to anchor new setting-specific narratives.
