Vortex Runner // Vortex Runner

The Vortex Runner art series card was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were specifically produced as promotional items, appearing exclusively in Set Boosters to showcase the diverse illustrative talent commissioned by Wizards of the Coast. Unlike standard game cards, these lack frame elements like mana costs or rules text, functioning instead as high-quality collectible art prints that emphasize the aesthetic world-building of the Strixhaven campus.

The artwork for this piece was rendered by artist Jason Rainville, who was tasked with depicting the magical, high-stakes academic environment of the Prismari college. Rainville’s design utilizes a dynamic composition to capture the elemental energy associated with the school’s focus on creative expression and raw power. Upon its release, the card series was well-received by the player community as a sophisticated way to highlight the visual artistry behind the game’s expansion sets.
