Where it came from
Vorthos, Steward of Myth was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to explore a retro-futuristic, space-carnival aesthetic, blending traditional gameplay mechanics with the whimsical, rule-bending spirit that characterizes the 'Un' series. The card was specifically created to cater to the 'Vorthos' player archetype—a term coined by the community to describe fans who prioritize narrative, flavor, and world-building over raw competitive performance.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the character as a grand, scholarly figure surrounded by relics of the game's deep lore. The design is mechanically self-referential, rewarding players for their knowledge of set symbols and character history. It serves as a meta-commentary on the player's role as a custodian of the game's expansive story, and it has been well-received by those who enjoy the more experimental and thematic corners of the hobby.
