What it does

At the beginning of combat on each opponent's turn, that player may exile a card from their graveyard. If the player doesn't, creatures they control can't attack you this turn.

Cephalids specialize in lose-lose situations.

Provenance

Where it came from

Web of Inertia was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was the third and final installment of the Odyssey block, designed to explore themes of the graveyard and resource management. The card itself was conceived as a defensive enchantment, intended to punish aggressive deck strategies by forcing opponents to exile cards from their graveyard to bypass the inertia it creates.

The card features illustration by artist Pete Venters, a prominent figure in early Magic art who was known for his distinct, expressive fantasy style. In this piece, Venters depicted a surreal, ethereal web-like barrier, visually reinforcing the card's function of halting forward movement. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche technical tool for control players, finding its primary utility in formats where graveyard-based interactions were prevalent.
