Provenance

Where it came from

Whitemane Lion was originally introduced in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering set Time Spiral. Designed as a functional homage to older, lower-cost utility creatures, the card features a 'bounce' ability that allows players to return a creature they control to their hand, providing both defensive utility and a way to re-trigger enter-the-battlefield effects. Its design reflects the set's broader theme of revisiting and reimagining mechanics from the game's earliest years.

The Time Spiral Remastered version, released in 2021, features updated card frames and artwork intended to evoke nostalgia for the era of classic card design. Illustrated by Kev Walker, the piece captures the fierce, protective nature of the lion within the lore of the Dominaria plane. It remains a staple in casual and competitive formats due to its versatility and its ability to protect key assets on the board from removal spells.
