Provenance

Where it came from

Whitemane Lion was released in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Planar Chaos, a release centered on the 'timeshifted' concept of an alternate timeline where history unfolded differently. Designed as part of the set's color-shifted mechanics, the card reimagines white's established gameplay philosophies by introducing self-bouncing abilities that were traditionally more common in blue, while maintaining the protective, knightly aesthetic of the creature type.

The card was illustrated by Kev Walker, a prominent fantasy artist known for his gritty, detailed style. Walker’s depiction captures the lion in a moment of poised agility, emphasizing the creature's connection to the mana-rich landscapes of the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its utility in 'combo' decks, as its ability to return a creature to its owner's hand provided a versatile way to re-trigger beneficial 'enters-the-battlefield' effects.
