Winter Orb

Winter Orb was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to represent a magical artifact that restricts the game's resource system. The Collectors' Edition was produced in late 1993 as a non-tournament legal boxed set intended for collectors, featuring gold-bordered backs and square corners to distinguish them from standard playing cards. This edition served as a premium showcase of the early game's aesthetic, providing a high-quality print run of the original cards for those interested in the art and history of the set.

The artwork for Winter Orb was created by artist Mark Poole. Poole’s illustration reflects the early, atmospheric fantasy style of Magic: The Gathering, focusing on the concept of a cold, crystalline sphere capable of freezing mana production. The design is widely regarded for its minimalist yet evocative quality, which helped establish the visual language of artifacts in the early game. Upon its release, the card became a cornerstone for control-style deck archetypes, cementing its reputation as a potent and iconic piece of early game design.
