Winter Orb

Winter Orb was originally released in the Alpha edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce a unique tactical bottleneck to the game. By forcing players to skip their untap step, the card fundamentally altered the tempo of matches, turning resource management into a central challenge. Its design evokes a sense of magical stasis, perfectly capturing the theme of early fantasy expansion sets where artifacts often disrupted the standard rules of play.

The version from the Pro Tour Collector Set, numbered mj358, represents a later period of the game when Wizards of the Coast released commemorative boxes featuring iconic cards from the competitive circuit. These editions were intended to provide players with access to staple cards that had become difficult to acquire. The art, credited to Mark Poole, remains one of the most recognizable illustrations in the game's history, celebrated for its minimalist and haunting depiction of a frozen, suspended sphere.
