Winter Orb

Winter Orb was introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, with this specific Unlimited Edition version appearing in late 1993 as the game’s first base set expansion. Designed by Richard Garfield for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering, the card was intended to introduce disruptive, tempo-altering mechanics that forced players to manage their mana resources more strategically. As part of the early game's design philosophy, it reflected a focus on high-impact, symmetrical artifacts that could fundamentally change the state of play.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the original art director for Magic: The Gathering. His illustration captures a cold, crystalline aesthetic meant to evoke the item's chilling mechanical effect of slowing down the game. While early Magic cards often featured eclectic and experimental art styles, Winter Orb has remained a recognizable fixture in the game’s history, frequently cited by players and historians for its persistent influence on competitive formats that allow older cards.
