Provenance

Where it came from

The Catalogus der Bibliotheek van het Ministerie van Oorlog was produced by the library of the Dutch Ministry of War as a comprehensive bibliographic record of its holdings. Published during the late 19th century, the volume served as a systematic administrative tool to catalog the technical, strategic, and historical military literature accessible to government officials and military personnel. It reflects the structured bureaucratic approach of the Dutch state in organizing its institutional knowledge during a period of professionalization within the Ministry of War.

The design of the catalog follows the formal conventions of institutional indexing typical of the era, prioritizing clarity and searchability for researchers and officers. While the authorship is collective, attributed to the ministry's library staff, the work stands as a testament to the period's emphasis on archival order. It was received as a functional reference work, intended to facilitate the internal management of military science assets rather than for commercial distribution or critical acclaim, and remains a valuable document for historians studying 19th-century Dutch military governance.
