This catalog was published in Arnhem in the late 19th century to facilitate the public auction of several private book collections following the deaths of their owners. The primary figures mentioned—A.J. van Asselt, J.G. Plate, and D.D. Veth—were notable Dutch citizens of the era. D.D. Veth, in particular, was a significant figure as a civil engineer and explorer who gained recognition for his scientific work in Sumatra and his leadership of the Cunene expedition in Africa.

The publication serves as a characteristic example of 19th-century bibliographic records intended for estate liquidation. It provides a structured inventory of the diverse libraries amassed by these individuals, reflecting the intellectual interests of the Dutch middle and upper classes during that period. These catalogs were designed for utility, aimed at bibliophiles, scholars, and institutional purchasers who sought to acquire rare or specialized volumes from private estates, though they are now primarily utilized by researchers as primary source material for tracking provenance and the circulation of historical texts.
