Theodor Körner's sämmtliche Werke

Theodor Körner’s sämmtliche Werke serves as a comprehensive collection of the literary output of Karl Theodor Körner, a German poet and dramatist whose work became synonymous with the German national liberation movement against Napoleon. Körner rose to prominence during the early 19th century as both a writer of lyrical dramas and a volunteer soldier who died in battle at the age of 21. His collected works were compiled shortly after his death to preserve his legacy, balancing his romanticized theatrical contributions with the patriotic fervor of his war songs, which solidified his reputation as a martyr for German independence.

The editorial history of these editions often reflects the changing political landscape of the 19th century, as Körner’s prose and poetry were frequently repurposed to evoke nationalistic sentiments. Designers and publishers of these volumes sought to balance the aesthetic sensibilities of German Romanticism with a functional, often somber layout that reflected the author’s tragic life and early sacrifice. Reception of his collected works was particularly fervent during the mid-to-late 1800s, when his poems were standard reading in German households, eventually tapering into a more academic interest as literary movements shifted away from his idealized, martial brand of lyricism.
