Theodor Körners sämtliche Werke

Theodor Körner’s sämtliche Werke collects the literary output of the German poet and soldier who became a national icon during the Napoleonic Wars. Following his death in the Battle of Gadebusch in 1813, his writings—particularly his collection of patriotic verse titled Leyer und Schwert—gained immense posthumous popularity. These collected editions were published throughout the 19th century to cement his legacy as a central figure of German Romanticism and early nationalist sentiment.

The design of these editions typically reflects the Victorian and Biedermeier-era preference for elegant, classicist typography and sturdy binding, often intended for middle-class libraries. These volumes were curated to showcase his evolution from a dramatist in Vienna to a freedom fighter, with editors focusing on the emotional resonance of his lyrical style. Reception was largely favorable among 19th-century German audiences, who viewed the works as essential expressions of the struggle for national identity.
