Provenance

Where it came from

Released in May 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion, this Arcanine card represents the final set produced for the Pokémon Trading Card Game by Wizards of the Coast before the license transitioned to The Pokémon Company. Skyridge was the third and final installment in the e-Card Series, which featured dot-code technology on the card borders intended for use with the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral to unlock game data, sound effects, or mini-games.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for the e-Card era focused on dynamic, clean character portraits set against distinct, often minimalist backgrounds. As a rare card within a set that saw a limited print run due to the impending transition in publishers, this Arcanine is highly regarded by collectors for its role as a representative of the closing chapter of the Wizards of the Coast era.
