Why it matters

As a psychic-type card from the promotional series, this piece holds a distinct place in the collection for its specific release classification. Collectors prize these promotional items because they exist outside standard set numbering, offering a unique snapshot of the character's appearance during this particular period of the game's history.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Mew BW98 card was released in 2013 as part of the Black & White series of Pokémon Trading Card Game promotional releases. It was specifically distributed within the Mew Collection box, a themed set that provided players and collectors with an exclusive card and associated booster packs, reflecting the common industry practice of bundling iconic legacy Pokémon with modern card sets to drive retail interest.

The card features an illustrative style consistent with the era's aesthetic, which emphasized high-energy, dynamic poses for Psychic-type Pokémon. Designed to celebrate the enduring popularity of Mew as a fan-favorite 'mythical' species, the card was received by the community as a accessible way to acquire a stylized version of the character, rather than as a competitively dominant card, cementing its status as a staple for collectors focusing on the Black & White promo era.
