Scyther

The Scyther card from the 2000 Base Set 2 expansion serves as a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of early Pokémon Trading Card Game history. Released as a reprint-focused set, Base Set 2 was designed to allow players to access key cards from the original Base Set and Jungle expansion that had become difficult to find as the game exploded in global popularity. By consolidating these high-demand cards into a single release, Wizards of the Coast ensured that the iconic early roster remained accessible to a new generation of players.

The artwork for this card features the original illustration by Ken Sugimori, whose minimalist and clean aesthetic defined the early visual language of the franchise. Sugimori, as the primary character designer for the Pokémon games, utilized a sharp, aggressive posture for Scyther that emphasized its status as a Mantis Pokémon. Within the meta-game of the era, the Scyther card was highly regarded for its versatile 'Swords Dance' and 'Slash' moves, earning it a reputation as a formidable grass-type inclusion that performed consistently well in competitive play.
