Provenance

Where it came from

Tropical Wind was released in 1999 as part of the Nintendo Black Star Promos set, serving as a promotional card for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It was specifically distributed to participants and winners of the Tropical Mega Battle, an exclusive international tournament held in Honolulu, Hawaii. The card was designed to function as both a competitive tool and a commemorative trophy for the event, reflecting the early globalization efforts of the Pokémon franchise.

The card features an illustration by the artist Kouki Saitou, whose work is highly regarded among collectors for its whimsical and clean aesthetic. Saitou’s design captures a distinct tropical theme that aligns with the location of the tournament, using bright colors and a serene composition. Upon its release, the card became a significant target for competitive players and enthusiasts alike due to its limited distribution and the prestige associated with the Tropical Mega Battle events.
