Chant Grégorien

Released in 1974 on the prestigious Archiv Produktion label, this recording of Gregorian chant features the Escolania de Montserrat under the direction of Gregori Estrada. The project was conceived as part of Deutsche Grammophon's Archiv Produktion series, which sought to document Western classical music history with rigorous musicological standards and high-fidelity production values. It captures the liturgical atmosphere of the Montserrat Abbey, emphasizing the historical continuity of the monastic chant tradition.

The album reflects the mid-20th-century resurgence of interest in early music, facilitated by the label's commitment to authentic performance practice. By pairing the natural acoustic resonance of the Montserrat basilica with the disciplined vocal training of the Escolania—one of the oldest boys' choirs in the world—Estrada aimed to present a refined, meditative interpretation. Upon its release, the recording was praised by critics for its clarity and the ensemble's precise, nuanced delivery of the medieval plainchant repertoire.
