Where it came from
Chant Grégorien was recorded by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac in Quebec, a monastery established in 1912 by monks from Solesmes Abbey in France. The record serves as a liturgical document, preserving the traditional monophonic, unaccompanied vocal music that has been central to the Benedictine Order’s prayer life for centuries. It was released in 1980 under the monastery's own label to provide listeners with an authentic experience of monastic devotion.
The production reflects the ascetic and meditative values of the Benedictine community, focusing on the clarity of the Latin liturgy rather than commercial appeal. The music follows the rhythmic and melodic traditions of the Solesmes school, which sought to restore the purity of Gregorian chant. At the time of its release, the recording was primarily intended for distribution within religious circles and to those interested in the preservation of ancient musical heritage.
