Chant Grégorien

Released in 1983 by the Erato label, this recording of Chant Grégorien captures the liturgical music tradition as performed by the Chœur Grégorien de Paris. The album emerged during a period of renewed academic and popular interest in early music, as listeners increasingly sought out the meditative, monophonic textures of medieval plainsong. Erato, a label recognized for its commitment to high-fidelity classical and Baroque productions, sought to present these ancient vocal works with a focus on liturgical authenticity and clear acoustic reproduction.

The Chœur Grégorien de Paris, known for its dedication to the semiological research of Gregorian chant, approached this project with an emphasis on the rhythmic and melodic nuances found in the earliest neumatic manuscripts. By adhering to historically informed performance practices, the ensemble aimed to strip away later centuries of musical ornamentation to reveal the stark, austere beauty of the original chants. Upon its release, the recording was well-received by scholars and classical enthusiasts for its disciplined delivery and its contribution to the preservation of sacred choral heritage.
