Where it came from
Released in the early 1950s on the Decca label, this recording serves as a definitive document of the liturgical chant tradition preserved by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The release captures the rigorous restoration of Gregorian chant initiated by the community in the 19th century, which aimed to purge later accretions and return to the rhythmic and melodic purity of the earliest manuscripts.
Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, the choir was highly regarded for its precision and its adherence to the Solesmes method of interpretation. The recording is noted for its meditative atmosphere and the acoustic clarity of the monastic setting, which helped introduce a broader, secular listening public to the austere beauty of plainchant during the mid-20th century.
