Where it came from
This recording captures the authentic liturgical chants of the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice and Saint-Maur, a community deeply rooted in the preservation of the Gregorian tradition. Produced as a private or limited pressing under catalog number 106 608 DE, the record serves as an auditory document of the monastic daily office, intended to preserve the solemn, monophonic vocal style that has characterized Benedictine worship for centuries.
The production philosophy behind this release prioritized acoustic purity and the atmospheric resonance of the abbey’s architecture over commercial polish. By capturing the natural reverberation of the stone chapel, the engineers aimed to transport the listener into the contemplative space of the monks. Upon its limited circulation, it was largely received by scholars of sacred music and institutional libraries as a faithful, unadorned representation of the Latin choral tradition.
