Chant Grégorien

Released in 1980 on the Harmonia Mundi France label, this recording of Chant Grégorien features the Deller Consort, an ensemble founded by the celebrated countertenor Alfred Deller. The album emerged during a period of renewed academic and popular interest in early music, as Harmonia Mundi sought to capture the ethereal, liturgical purity of medieval plainsong within the high-fidelity constraints of the studio. It stands as a testament to the label's commitment to authentic performance practice, focusing on the monophonic texture of the chant rather than modern harmonization.

The recording is characterized by the Deller Consort's signature precision and vocal restraint, which align with the historical context of the chant as a meditative and functional tool of the Church. By eschewing unnecessary ornamentation, the ensemble aimed to convey the austerity and spiritual gravity inherent in the Gregorian tradition. Upon its release, the record was well-received by early music enthusiasts and critics for its clarity and the group's ability to maintain a sense of solemnity across the liturgical repertoire.
