Where it came from
Valse Des Regrets was released in 1984 by Régis Willem, appearing as a self-published or private pressing without a traditional record label. This release emerged during a period of experimentation for independent electronic and ambient musicians in Europe, who frequently turned to small-run pressings to distribute their work to niche audiences outside of major commercial distribution channels.
The production reflects the minimalist, synthesizer-driven aesthetic prevalent in the early 1980s underground scene. By operating without a label, Willem maintained total creative control over the sonic landscape of the record, prioritizing a personal, atmospheric sound that was characteristic of artists seeking to capture specific moods through modular synthesis and early digital sequencing.
