Chants Grégorien - Les Modes Gregoriens

Released by Decca, this recording of Gregorian chant features the Choeur des Moniales de l’Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Argentan under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. The release sits within a significant mid-20th-century effort to capture the authentic, contemplative nature of plainsong, reflecting the liturgical traditions maintained by the Benedictine order during a period when these ancient musical forms were being documented for a wider international audience.

Dom Joseph Gajard was a pivotal figure in the 20th-century interpretation of Gregorian chant, serving as the choirmaster at Solesmes Abbey. His work was deeply grounded in the restoration of the rhythmic style of chant, emphasizing the importance of the text and natural flow. The production aims for a serene, acoustic clarity that honors the architectural and spiritual environment of the abbey, finding reception among musicologists and listeners interested in the historical preservation of sacred music.
