Where it came from
Released in 1972 on the Fontenelle label, this recording captures the liturgical traditions of the Benedictine monks of Saint Wandrille de Fontenelle, an abbey located in Normandy, France. The record was produced as part of the monks' efforts to document and share their specific style of plainsong, reflecting the centuries-old heritage of the order that traces its roots back to the 7th century.
The aesthetic of the album is minimalist, adhering to the solemnity and contemplative nature of Gregorian chant. The production serves as a sonic archive of the abbey's daily office, focusing on vocal purity and the natural acoustics of the monastic space. It was received by musicologists and liturgical scholars as a faithful representation of the Solesmes-influenced interpretation of chant, preserving a rigorous approach to medieval musical tradition that was increasingly rare in the early 1970s.
